Caring for your children's eyes

We recommend bringing your child in to have their first eye examination around their 4th birthday, however, there is no minimum age to eye tests.

Children often cannot identify a problem with their vision or eye health, so if you are concerned then do come in to see us. Our kid's eye tests are friendly, fun and relaxed. We thoroughly examine their vision, eye health and development. It doesn’t matter whether your child can read yet as our qualified team has a range of tests available using pictures, symbols and numbers to assess the vision of children from a very young age.

Common Vision Problems in Children

If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about your child’s vision, booking an eye examination is essential for early diagnosis and treatment.

Squints (Strabismus)

A misalignment of the eyes, where one or both may turn inward, outward, or upward.

Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)

A condition where one eye is weaker than the other, often caused by strabismus or uncorrected refractive errors.

Colour Vision Deficiency

Around 1 in 10 boys have difficulty distinguishing certain colours, particularly red and green.

Coloured Overlay Tests and Colorometry for Visual Stress

Visual Stress is a visual processing disorder characterised by heightened sensitivity to light and a presumed hyper-excitability of the visual cortex. It is estimated to affect approximately 20% of the population—roughly 13 million people in the UK. Whilst distinct from dyslexia, Visual Stress impacts approximately 40% of individuals with dyslexic conditions.

The diagnostic process begins with a comprehensive eye examination to eliminate any alternative underlying visual complications. Subsequently, we conduct a series of specialised assessments, including a comprehensive colorimetry evaluation. Where appropriate, we can recommend coloured filters to help mitigate the condition's effects.
